Inspiration Boost : Mégane Fortin

Today, we introduce you to Mégane Fortin, the youngest collaborating artist of Lalita's Art Shop! Mégane started painting at the age of 7, alongside the painter Maurice Louis, with whom she developed a true passion for abstraction.

At only 14 years old, Mégane already has an impressive artistic career. This young prodigy, born in Quebec, has exhibited not only in the United States but also in Europe!

Hello Mégane, we are thrilled to welcome you again to our BOOST of inspiration! For those who haven't had the chance to discover you yet, could you introduce yourself in a few words?

My artist name is Meg, I'm 14 years old, and I started doing abstract painting at the age of 7, so I can now say that I've been a painter for more than half of my life! I love abstract art because I paint spontaneously by combining colors with my tools (palette knife and brush), and then I discover the final creation.

You are a very young artist, yet you already possess a great artistic maturity. Did you always know that you wanted to pursue painting?

No, I have always loved all forms of art, even figurative ones like drawing, watercolor, knitting, clay, weaving, etc. But my discovery of abstract painting gives me the desire to create without limits, and that's why I will continue doing it all the time!

Do you find it easy to manage your artistic career alongside school? How do you find balance in all of this?

I mainly paint in the evenings and on weekends, so it doesn't interfere with my school hours. That's why I find it easy to balance both aspects of my life!

What made you choose abstract painting over other forms of art? Do you practice any other art forms or activities?

I don't like having boundaries; I prefer starting from scratch, a blank canvas, and creating my own outcome. I also practice drama and enjoy summer water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding!

What are the main challenges you face in relation to your artistic work?

I receive many requests for custom orders, which leaves me with less time to work on my own creations. Sometimes I don't like a painting, so I set it aside for a few months before revisiting it. During the pandemic, there was a period where it was difficult to obtain canvases, which prevented me from painting for some time, and I found that really sad.

How do you cultivate your inspiration on a daily basis? How do you manage to stay inspired?

Actually, when I paint, it's spontaneous. I don't think, I don't ponder over it; it's more about the feeling.

What is your main source of inspiration, and is there an artist you particularly admire?

I draw inspiration from the weather, nature, animals, colors, and my emotions. Like everyone else, I'm familiar with the great painters in art history, but I don't draw inspiration from other artists' works because I don't want to influence my own creations

Do you usually create art while listening to music? If so, what type of music do you enjoy listening to while working?

Yes, I choose a popular playlist or I select a genre of music that matches my current emotion.

Do you have a favorite art book or magazine, and why?

Every evening, I read a page from the book "Les femmes artistes sont dangereuses" by Laure Adler and Camille Viéville. I find that the artists featured in the book have very interesting journeys and stories.

Tell us a bit about the beautiful beanies and tubes you created for us. What inspired you, and what techniques did you use for these creations?

For the beanie concept, I wanted to create clean and well-defined artworks with minimal colors. I used a palette knife for their creation. As for inspiration, I drew inspiration from the season in which the beanie will be launched.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Can you envision your future?

I let myself be guided by the opportunities that come my way, but it's difficult to predict where I will be by then!

Do you have any future projects you would like to share with us?

I will be preparing a new collection for the beanies, and I will be exhibiting in New York in 2023. I hope to travel more with my artworks in the years to come.
